This Deco cooperative in the West End-Collegiate Historic District, a half block from Riverside Park. The facade is organized vertically in brick, with the building's ornament concentrated at the entrance, where the original door and light fixtures remain. The period identity is clear at the street. Inside, the corridors had lost their charm.
Every prewar building faces the same choice at the start of this work. You can lean into the period detailing, or you can move transitional and let a contemporary line run against it. Both hold up in a Manhattan building. This board chose the second.
In the corridors, we set a contemporary carpet against a traditional color scheme. The pattern carries the movement, the palette keeps it anchored to the building. In the lobby, the direction was brightness. We worked with the existing period details rather than around them and brought the furniture toward transitional, which lifted the room without asking it to become something else.
The result stays NY classic that will age well.
