City Spire | New York | 2018
City Spire’s octagonal layouts identify it as one of the country’s tallest residential buildings– and also present unique challenges for an efficient but impactful interior redesign. KAID developed a strategic mix of custom elements to bring forward-facing elegance back to this ‘80s icon of the architectural world.
With hallways that tend to bend more than they yield straight runs, City Spire required special attention for floor treatments. Most carpets require unsightly transition sections to change direction at every turn, but KAID’s design prevents this with gentle curves engineered to interlock at any angle. Our designers were inspired by the raked sand in Japanese rock gardens, often used to represent the ripples created by flowing water.
Expanding compositions of custom warm wood millwork at the elevator vestibules usher visitors to each hallway, and also reference the pointed character of the building’s layouts. A mix of soft lighting (including new coves) and complementary finishes round out the interior updates.
